Who killed Shumbha and Nishumbha?

 Who killed Shumbha and Nishumbha?

Another glorious great victory of Goddess Durga is described in Devi Mahatmyam. Legend has it that Maharishi Kashyap and Danu's son, Namuchi were killed at the hands of Indra.

When Namuchi's brothers, Shumbha and Nishumbha, came to know about this sad news, they became very angry.

They snatched Indrasan and started ruling there. His tyranny on earth and heaven caused a rage. The gods worshiped Goddess Durga and requested her for help. Mother promised to protect them.

Then a kumari appeared from the body of Gauri, who was called 'Kaushiki' due to her coming out of the body cell and 'Matangi' as a result of appearing from the body of the goddess. Assuring help to the gods and human beings, the goddess sat on the top of the Himalayas riding on a lion.

It is further mentioned in Durga Saptashati that when the messengers of Shumbha and Nishumbha saw Goddess Durga there, they could not remain astonished.

He ran to his kings Shumbha and Nishumbha and said, "O Maharaja! You are the king of the three worlds, you have everything, even Indra's Airavat elephant. The only lack is a divine woman.

We have seen a very attractive beauty, who is all-beautiful in the three worlds." Hearing this, Shumbha and Nishumbha sent their messengers to say that the kings of the three worlds Shumbha and Nishumbha want to make you their queen.

Mother replied that I have taken a vow that I will marry the person who will defeat me in battle.

Shumbha and Nishumbha got angry after hearing Kaushiki's words, they sent two demons named Chand and Munda and asked them to hold her hair and present her in front of us.

As soon as both the asuras approached the goddess, the goddess took the form of Mahakalika and killed Chand and Munda. Mother's name was 'Chamunda' because of killing both the demons. After this Shumbh-Nishumbha himself came to the battlefield.

Then Brahmi appeared from the effulgence of Brahma, Vaishnavi from Vishnu, Maheshwari from Mahesh, and Chandika from Ambika. Innumerable goddesses arrived on the battlefield from all sides. The demon army started running away.

Devi challenged Shumbha and Nishumbha. He rained arrows on Nishumbha and the Goddess killed him by piercing all the weapons coming from Nishumbha.

Seeing the condition of his brother, as soon as Shumbha went to fight with Goddess Chandika, Goddess Chandika killed him with a trident and liberated the three worlds from the atrocities of both the Asuras.
